The transformation from DIGITAL to MATERIAL.

“The central theory behind “the medium is the message” is that the medium through which content is carried plays a vital role in the way it is perceived.” (Gross 2011)

This video demonstrates how transforming a message from a digital to a material medium will alter the meaning of an original message.

  1. Great post! You not only explain “the medium is the message” theory, but also give an awesome example of the transformation from digital to material and it is all done in a simple, but really creative way. What is more, your text argument is concise, short and clear. Unfortunately, I can’t open the source, it says that ‘we couldn’t find your page’ – just a give it a quick look :).

  2. The video is a really straight forward way to demonstrate how transforming the medium completely changes the message. It’s a great way to explain the concepts for someone new/struggling with them.

    1. Thanks Hayden,

The medium is the message can be viewed as very simple or very complex depending on how you approach it. I like to just think of the medium as anything that is an extension of ourselves.

  3. Great blog post! I like the simplistic approach you took to explaining the process of digital transformed into material. It’s straight to the point and quite effective in conveying this weeks lecture content.

Similarly, this post (https://mcluhangalaxy.wordpress.com/2013/12/14/marshall-mcluhan-the-print-to-digital-shift-which-undermines-nationalism/) talks about McLuhan’s notion of the medium being the message, however also argues the way in which new media technologies are not just developing in media culture but also transforming and challenging contemporary media trends from its stemming of print media.

    1. thanks for the feedback- it’s much appreciated. That link you put is very interesting. It’s amazing the way McLuhan’s views on digital media resonate so strongly in the digital world we are now living in. What’s your view on his idea of the “global village”

  4. This was a really interesting way to explain this week’s lecture in your own way. Really made me think and see the lecture in a more simplistic manner. I don’t think you could have explained the concept of “the medium is the message” more effectively. Have you checked out this week’s reading from Esther Leslie? https://moodle.uowplatform.edu.au/mod/resource/view.php?id=259876 There is a great part in which it explains that these new ways of creating content expands our ability to create better stories.

    Well done!

    1. Thanks for the kind words! The interesting thing about the medium is the message is that it if you believe a medium to be “any extension of ourselves”then the medium is the message can be applied to anything you want..

The reading from Leslie is something I’ll need to look at. Thanks for the heads up!

  5. Good stuff.. creative and unique way to explore the idea of material to digital transformation (or vise versa) and illustrate McLuhan’s expression. The video also helped me understand the concept of material to digital transformation which at times was difficult to follow during the lecture. Cheers!

  6. You have not only discussed the transformation from digital to material, but have also given an example of what McLuhan means when he says ‘the medium is the message’ and links the two very well!

  7. Very creative, I dont think I could do this myself. You have explained it very well and you have managed to do it without any background noise, and the way you portrayed McLuhan’s message of “The Medium is the Message” was great. Thumbs up Mate!! Good Stuff Edward

  9. Great post! This is one of my favourite youtube videos so far. I think your approach to the ideas was really simplistic but so creative, wishing I had of thought of it! It summarises the idea of digital and material very well and is so easy to follow. I like that you have related the video to the medium is the message and how easily it can change. If you get a chance you might want to check out http://www.razonypalabra.org.mx/N/N80/V80/00A_Strate_V80.pdf which elaborates on the medium is the message idea, but it’s quite a long read 🙂

  10. I remember thinking something like this during the lecture, great execution! As other have said, very simple yet equally effective presentation allows easy comprehension of your point. Great representation of Gross’ ideal, the message would take on a completely different meaning with any other medium other than digital.
